Eco-Dive At One°15 Marina Sentosa Cove Turns Up 200kg Of Marine Litter

Mar 16, 2018

Singapore, 16 March 2018 – Further to the last underwater marina clean-up in September 2017, another eco-dive was initiated on 11 March 2018 at ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove, setting precedent to the coral reef planting exercise slated for September 2018. The operation mobilized 100 enthusiastic volunteers comprising ONE°15 Members, boaters, members from the dive and sailing associations as well as ONE°15 and SUTL staff members.

Reporting at 3pm, volunteers attended a safety briefing conducted by safety officer Takuya Kimura, an experienced diver who also took part in the marina clean-up in 2017, and ONE°15’s staff member Jonathan Sit. Topics covered include things to note at the dive site, the volunteers’ roles in the clean-up, entry and exit techniques, dive procedures, emergency procedures and signal review.

The clean-up began at 4pm with clear skies, still air and plenty of eager hands. At the superyacht berths, divers worked hard to remove the marine litter in the marina by going under the waters while non-divers scooped up floating wastes and helped record the litter that has been collected.

Ahead of Earth Day, volunteers managed to improve the health of the marina by successfully removing over 500 pieces (or 200 kilograms) of trash and pollutant. Among the debris, there were several notable odd items collected including a supermarket trolley, glasses, umbrellas, bicycles and a kick scooter. Other common garbage were small items such as plastic bags and cigarette butts. A detailed breakdown of the marine litter collected can be viewed at https://www.projectaware.org/debris-data/one-15-marina-singapore

As a show of appreciation, ONE°15 Marina treated the volunteers to a sumptuous barbecue dinner and free-flow beer at Boaters’ Bar, where they spent a beautiful evening socializing with like-minded eco-conscious individuals. Volunteers responded positively to the experience and vowed to encourage those around them to channel their appreciation for the environment into concrete actions to protect it. At the dinner, Teo Joo Leng, General Manager of

ONE°15 Marina said, “As a friend to the sea, ONE°15 Marina aims to develop a thriving ecosystem in our marina and has been actively promoting sound environmental stewardship. The goal of this exercise is to groom the superyacht area for our coral reef planting exercise in September. Eventually, we hope to open up areas of the marina for the public to dive, snorkel, and learn about marine biodiversity. We would like to extend a special thank you to all volunteers for taking time out of your busy schedules to help advance our eco-objectives.”
