SINGAPORE – 10 September 2021 – To mark its 14th anniversary on 12 September 2021, ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove (the “Club”) is cementing its commitment to reef preservation and the protection of marine life by organising an Ocean Conservation Awareness Day.
The exciting lineup of events include a “Make Your Own Coral Reef” craft activity for children aged 5 to 12 years where they will be guided to make a coral reef out of recycled materials. There will also be a Coral Garden Tour, and an educational talk on ocean conservation and the preservation of coral reefs.
In keeping with the theme, the Club’s LATITUDE Bistro has prepared a 5-course set dinner of sustainably sourced seafood. Priced at S$68++, the meal will feature ingredients sourced from local farms that are committed to earth-friendly farming practices.
ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove is a strong advocate of marine conservation and has received numerous accolades for its efforts to build a thriving marine biosystem within its waters. The Club is the first marina in the region to be accredited with the internationally recognised ISO 14001:2004 (2007) environmental management certification. It is also the first Level 4 Clean Marina ISO 140001 marina in Southeast Asia to be accredited as a “Fish Friendly Marina” by the Marina Industries Association (MIA) in recognition of the Club’s high standards of environmental stewardship and efforts towards conserving marine life. Other awards include the 2015 Green Maritime Company of the Year, an award which recognises the Club’s protection of the environment, as well as the Luxury Eco-friendly Hotel of the Year 2017.
Nursing our corals back to health
Over the years, the Club has championed several environmental projects and established itself as an inclusive place of learning for students and marine wildlife lovers.
One key initiative was the launch of the ONE°15 Marina-Seakeepers Asia Coral Garden project in 2018 to advance reef restoration research as well as enhance marine biodiversity in Singapore waters. In collaboration with the NUS’ Tropical Marine Science Institute, a 150m stretch of seabed within the marina was apportioned for coral cultivation. As a result of these efforts, there are 239 coral transplants on the marina’s seawall today.
In the same year, the Club also installed a sea bin to remove floating trash from the marina’s water surface. Since its installation, the sea bin has collected more than 9,360kg of litter.
Plastic-free, paper-less culture
ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove’s commitment to the environment extends outside the waters and is ubiquitous across its club amenities. In line with the global plastic-free movement, the Club has eliminated the use of plastic food packaging at its dining outlets, using instead, compostable packaging made from plants. Through this initiative, the Club has avoided the use of 2,270kg of plastics from its day-to-day operations over the past year. The Club has also eliminated other single-use plastics, such as plastic straws at the Club’s dining outlets, plastic bags at the gym and pool, as well as bottled water.
In addition, the Club has embarked on a digitisation drive to eliminate paper forms and statements as it transits to electronic forms and statements.
Driving more awareness
Beyond these initiatives, educational outreach is a key tenet of the Club’s environmental conservation efforts. Eco Exhibitions and other innovative activities are regularly organised to raise awareness of the importance of environmental conservation. This includes the annual ONE°15 Marina Clean Up to remove marine litter from the marina’s waters and foster eco-consciousness amongst members of the public. The meaningful activity attracts more than 100 volunteers yearly, with more than 260kg of marine litter removed from the seabed since the activity’s inception in 2017.
