SINGAPORE, 25 AUGUST 2022 – The yacht industry has been making steady progress in the last decade to become more eco-friendly; but can luxury really be sustainable?
In celebration of its 15th anniversary this year, ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove (ONE°15) has organised a month-long campaign in September dedicated to building awareness on ocean conservation with a focus on sharks, stingrays and corals. Held as part of their annual celebration and many sustainability initiatives, the ONE°15 Eco Month campaign seeks to engage, educate, and empower the public with the knowledge of how they can contribute to protecting our water and coastlines.
ONE°15 Eco Month
As a marina, the coastline and oceans are where ONE°15’s core activities take place and keeping them clean is a priority. ONE°15 seeks to engage their members through workshops, Coral Garden tours, an exhibition, giveaways and more.
As part of the slew of activities planned for the month, the Coral Garden tour, slated to be conducted on 11 September 2022, will allow participants to learn about the marina’s coral restoration efforts and take a close up look at a sea bin in operation. To further impart knowledge on marine conservation, the Club will also be conducting an Eco Talk on 11 September 2022, where ONE°15’s Eco Advisor, Ms. Sam Shu Qin, will share how coral reefs contribute to our ecosystem, and inspire attendees through the enthralling recount of her expeditions at seas as a marine scientist.
As part of their community outreach, the Club will also be holding a month-long exhibition featuring facts on sharks, stingrays, and corals while sharing on how they are vital indicators of the health of the ocean. In tandem with the exhibition, the Club will also be running a social media campaign focused on fun facts about marine conservation while encouraging the community to take charge of their own carbon and plastic footprint. To incentivise this learning process, weekly giveaways will be held on social media, and fervent participants can stand a chance to win F&B vouchers at the Club’s restaurants, as well as stays at ONE°15 Marina.
Amping Up Eco-Consciousness at The Club
In conjunction with the ONE°15 Eco Month, the marina will be launching the Coral Garden Volunteer Program in a bid to make the Coral Garden project more sustainable and allow more members to enjoy it. Since the launch of the Coral Garden in 2018, ONE°15 has grown and transplanted over 239 different coral fragments in this joint project with the Tropical Marine Science Institute at NUS. The volunteer program seeks to bring together like-minded individuals passionate about preserving the wealth of biodiversity in our oceans, giving them the chance to play a part in upkeeping and facilitating research within the Coral Garden.
While the marina places emphasis on protecting the waters, they are also working to bring sustainability to their operations on land as well. The Club recently installed an indoor vertical vegetable farm within one of its restaurants. The Club believes that growing their own food helps to set an example for their diners while educating them on the importance of sustainable sources of food which can limit the risks posed by increasingly fragile global supply chains while prioritising consumer health through the growth of pesticide and herbicide-free vegetables. The implementation of this vertical farm furthers their efforts in adopting sustainable food sources into their F&B operations. Additionally, upsized recycle bins have also been put in place at the marina to accommodate and encourage more recycling of trash.
Managing Sustainability as a Waterfront Lifestyle Destination
ONE°15 prides itself in its stringent regulations and great efforts in being environmentally conscious. Its eco efforts include elimination of single-use plastics such as straws, takeaway containers, cutleries, hotel room toiletries, and bin liners. Water for hotel and event guests will also be served in jugs instead of disposable plastic bottles and they have pledged to eliminate all single-use plastics from their operations by 2025. Likewise, all forms and statements have been digitised to reduce the use of paper.
A sea bin has also been installed to supplement the marina’s daily routine of removing marine trash from the water surface. Additionally, the Club also holds annual eco-dives to engage members in its eco campaigns.
Having been accredited as a Platinum 5 Gold Anchor and Level 4 Clean Water marina, ONE°15 Marina continues to chart the course for the rest of the marinas in the Southeast Asia region by promoting environmental mindfulness and conveying the message that every step, whether big or small, counts towards ocean conservation.
